NEWS-02: Base Life Memberships
Submitted by: Pat Householder on
6/29/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
The question comes up again and again.

"Can I shift berths to another base and transfer my base life membership?"

The short answer is no.

The reason why is your Base life dues are paid directly to the base and the national organization has no part of that transaction.

Typically, when you sign up for base life membership, that is exactly what it means. It is not transferable from base to base.

But also be aware of this.

To be a member of a base, you also have to be a member of USSVI. Base life member or not, if you let your national membership lapse, your base membership vaporizes as well.

NEWS-03: A privacy reminder to all members
Submitted by: Pat Householder on
7/1/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
The information in our USSVI/Decklog system is password protected for a reason. The only reason why this information is accessable at all current members is to help shipmates reconnect with each other.

Even if you are a member of USSVI or of a boat association using our system, you may NOT use the information found in our records for any commercial purpose.

In turn, USSVI/Decklog will not give, rent, sell or barter this information to any business for any reason.

On 8/21/2006 we sent out a POC bulletin to advise all members that you have control of the privacy settings in your record and they are available to you under your record WEBPAGE tab when you log on at www.ussvi.org

This section allows you to choose whether to permit their Address/Phone number and/or email to appear in the "members only" online membership directory.

If you are considering this step, realize that the directory is already password protected from outsiders, and by blocking your info, your directory page will prevent any shipmates from locating you because that information would be blocked from view. This would also be true for any boat associations or other organizations also linked with your record.

More on member record privacy and why the USSVI.ORG website much 'safer' than the typical website when it comes to hackers and spammers?

Unlike the typical website, our system, part of the decklog system, is 'database driven' and not HTML.

This means that all pages are custom coded and really don't exist until "built on the fly" as called. Once called, the code connects to the database and "renders" HTML code for that ONE visitor. Once the visitor leaves the page, IT DIES.

Thus there is no page that has member related data) on the site that can be "spidered" by a hacker, since no page really exists in the HTML format until called ... and then it only exists in memory of your computer.

Since the entire website is data driven, all calls to any page other than the URL (USSVI.ORG), automatically redirects it to the USSVI home page.

In this way Tim VeArd can ensure that spammers and hackers can't penetrate our firewalls and gain access to the online database. Put another way, all "visits" are forced through one path that can be analyzed, monitored and terminated if coming from a known hacker.

*A web crawler (also known as a Web spider or Web robot) is a program or automated script which browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner. Other less frequently used names for Web crawlers are ants, automatic indexers, bots, and worms. Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler for more information about web crawlers and "spidering."

NOTE: Tim does allow popular search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and others to access to the site, but only to specific pages created for just them, so that the site can be cataloged and 'found' when certain keywords (like submarine, subvet, USSVI, etc) are searched.

**E-mail spam is a subset of spam that involves sending nearly identical messages to thousands (or millions) of recipients by E-mail. Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_spam for more information about "spam."

We all receive emails offering fabulous sums of money for some outlandish reason. What to do about these emails.

Obviously it is a two part answer...

1. NEVER REPLY to the skunk.
2. "Flush" the email with your delete button.

Santa Claus is a children's tale, shipmates. No one is going to toss a boatload of money through your front door, no matter how appealing the email.

This phishing email doesn't involve USSVI, but some of our members do belong to the USNA Association.

Here is a posting from the US Naval Acadamy website:

E-mail Scam Warning
We have been advised that a link to our website has been used in a fraudulent e-mail message. Please do not reply to the e-mail or contact the sender. The message may look similar to the following:

Where are they, you ask?

Click on the FIND A BASE button, then click the BASE NEWSLETTERS button on the left side of the screen.

If the posted newsletter seems out of date, it is because the base tools user has not updated the info in their USSVI Base Info record.

Click on an underlined address (URL) to view that Base's Newsletter.

Click on Base name to see detailed information about that base.

Questions, comments and concerns are always welcome.
