NEWS-02: Finding your shipmates on the "Ustafish"
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 6/22/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to Tim VeArd and his valuable www.decklog.com website, various boat associations now have online membership databases.

This is a VERY good thing, because it helps us all link up with our shipmates. Why is that?

Because each crewman is 'linked' by the boats he served in, so that when a 'boat crew' is searched for under the USSVI "Boats and Crews" button, they will appear. (The address remains protected unless the searcher logs in as a valid crewmember or a current USSVI member.)

Does your boat Association use this valuable tool?

How to find out: Enter www.decklog.com/ss-(your three-digit hull no.).asp in the browser command line.

ex: www.decklog.com/ss-395.asp

Any boat Association member recordkeeper who would like to have one of these free database websites should contact Patrick Householder at householderp@comcast.net

NEWS-03: Boat Association updates

---------------------------------------------------------
Did you serve in Redfish?

How about Segundo, Sea Poacher, Sea Owl, Chopper, Charr, Diodon, Razorback, Sea Fox or Gudgeon?

What do they all have in common? They all have started maintaining online crew databases through Tim VeArd's www.DECKLOG.com.

So what?

This same database also combines the USSVI, NSL, SVWWII and other boat association records, all protected by password.

Many of us served on more than one boat, and the online database connects us through the boats we served in, making it easier to find our shipmates.

The more Associations that participate, the more likely we will connect with our shipmates, because many hands working together is far better than isolated stand alone records, mostly offline.

To see if YOUR boat has a online database, type
www.decklog.com/ss-(your 3 digit hull no).asp

Click on the link below or paste it into your browser to see what the USS Chopper Crew page look like.

NEWS-05: The Membership Committee
Submitted by: Pat Householder on
6/23/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Who is on the new member committee in your base?

Here's a clue... Look in the nearest mirror.

Everyone of us knows submarine veterans who have yet to join USSVI. Invite them in again and again, if necessary!

The AMERICAN SUBMARINER magazine itself is worth the annual cost, and that makes the membership in USSVI an additional bonus!

We like to party, sure, but our REAL purpose is to remember our fallen heros and to help spread the word about the good works submariners have done and are doing.

Not everyone can attend meetings, but everybody can receive a magazine, so go spread the word!

Then smile at that guy in the mirror, cause he did good!

Visit http://www.navsource.org/ when you can.

John Carcioppolo sez "It is a Photographic History of the U.S. Navy. I've never seen this site before. Some one at EB sent me this site for work stuff at NUWC.

The Submarine section is pretty good.

Although NavSource is not endorsed by or affiliated in any way with the U.S. Navy, the
Naval Historical Center, the U.S. Government or any of its Departments, it is still pretty comprehensive."

Thanks, John.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to have a
US Congressman that is also a member of the USSVI.

At various times in his career, he served on the U.S.S. Florida, U.S.S. Atlanta and U.S.S. West Virginia.

Also, John Winney in

NEWS-16: Lets hear it for the ladies of Wahoo Base!
Submitted by: Errol D. Vanicek, Treasurer, USSVI Nebraska Base on 6/27/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
We're please to give recognition for the Contributions of the Wives of Submarine Veterans in Nebraska (The SILENT PARTNERS: wives of US SUB VETS WWII)and the SUBVETTES USSVI (wives of USSVI Members) who were the first to provide financial support for the refurbishment of the USS WAHOO (SS 238) Memorial.

The SILENT PARTNERS contributed $700.00 and the
SUBVETTES USSVI contributed $300.00.

The combined amount of $1,000.00 was received prior to any other financial support being presented.

The combined amount of $1,000.00 presented by the
ladies was determined to be adequate for the completion of one portion of the overall refurbishment project.

The refurbishment of the plaque and dolphins was identified for completion with the funds presented by the ladies.

In early 2007 Mission Foundry Incorporated had submitted a proposal for the refurbishment of the plaque and dolphins. Mission Foundry Inc. was contacted in February 2008 concerning the work. Mission Foundry Inc. indicated that the refurbishment work could still be completed within the range of the monies donated by the ladies.

The plaque and the dolphins have been removed and taken to Mission Foundry Inc. in
Omaha.

Thank you ladies for making the 'meaningful first step'.
