NEWS-01: The new submarine capital of the Navy is Kitsap

---------------------------------------------------------
Capt. Reid Tanaka reluctantly relinquished command of Naval Base Kitsap to Capt. Mark Olson on Wednesday, thanking those who contributed to a frenetic but rewarding three years.

Under Tanaka's leadership, the burgeoning base added five submarines, and two others were converted from carrying nuclear weapons to cruise missiles.

"The new submarine capital of the Navy is Kitsap," Tanaka told about 200 invited guests during a change-of-command ceremony that was chased into the
Bangor theater by threatening skies. "There are more submarine crews in Kitsap than in any other place."

As part of the Navy's shift of forces to the
Pacific Ocean, two Trident submarines moved from Kings Bay, Ga., to Bangor, along with the spy submarine USS Jimmy Carter. Two attack subs, the USS Seawolf and USS Connecticut, switched from Groton, Conn., to Bremerton.

NEWS-04: JAPAN'S SUBMERSIBLE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 6/12/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
This saga recounts the late Tom Payne's adventures during the last voyage of His Imperial Japanese Majesty's Sensuikan Toku (Special Submarines).

"In 1945 I returned from World War II as Executive Officer and Navigator of the U.S. Navy prize crew in one of these aircraft-carrying giants: H.I.J.M.S. I-400. Sailing her from
Sasebo, Occupied Japan, to Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, seemed a fitting finale to my career in the Submarine Service.

I'll begin by describing Japan's Top Secret submersible aircraft carriers, summarize their operational history, recount my experience in the Occupation of Japan, explain how our prize crew learned to operate the unusual I-boats, and tell the tale of I-400's eventful transpacific passage."

a. At the end of WWII, Japanese submarine I-14 was given to Commander John S. "Junior" McCain, son of the carrier task force commander Vice Admiral John S. "Slew" McCain (and father of Arizona Senator John S. McCain, III).

b. The George Washington sail on display at the
Submarine Force Museum and Library outside the main gate at Subase/Groton is NOT 100% 598! Some of it is from the Abraham Lincoln sail. The 598 hit a Japanese ship and parts of the 602 was used in the repair.

c. John Crouse (curator of St. Marys museum) won the first USSVI Ben Bastura Historical Achievement award. Jim Christly was the winner in 2007. Who will win in 2008? Find out first at Ft. Worth Convention.

d. There was a Torpedo Factory in
Washington DC in WWII. It is now an art museum of the same name in Alexandria, VA and draws some 500,000 people/year.

e. The
U.S. sold 74 Diesel submarines to 13 foreign countries. Turkey and Brazil bought 26 and 11 respetively. Little known was that Japan "borrowed" the Mingo which was eventually returned and sunk as a target.

f. The initial Scorpion was cut apart to build the George Washington. This was the only boat cut to build a boomer. However parts from other Skipjack Class boats went into the Patrick Henry and even some parts meant for the Shark were diverted to the Robert E. Lee.

g. An SSGN,was similar in concept to the Halibut, but with the improved S5W reactor plant the basic Thresher class hull was in the works. SSGN 600 was to be one of these. It was to have (budgeted for in 1959)four hangers each carrying one or more modified Jpiter missiles in a configuration which had four missile tubes in an enlarged sail. This plan was scrapped when in 1956, the Jupiter equipped submarine program was scrapped and work turned to using a solid fueled missile (to become the Polaris).

h. Workers at Electric Boat will christen the fifth submarine of the
Virginia class, named New Hampshire, during ceremonies on Saturday at General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Conn. Of the first 4 in the class, 3 were late and over budget. The New Hampshire, however, is 8 months ahead and $120 million below budget.

i. Not submarine related but interesting..What ship is the only one with a "bathtub" installed?
It was installed for FDR and his trip to French Moroco in 1943 aboard the USS Iowa BB. OK, then what submarine had a Steinway piano install from 61-86? That was the Edison, SSBN 610.

WORM
Worms are a close cousin to viruses and Trojan Horses. Unlike a virus they don't infect other programs. They do however make many copies of themselves in memory, which effectively consumes all your memory. This leaves no memory to run you regular programs. Your PC may behave very erratically, or just grind to a halt!

Some worms get into your e-mail list and e-mail themselves to everyone on your e-mail list without your knowledge, and then on and on.

HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language is the coding or language that is used to write/format web pages on Servers so that Browsers can display them. If you click on "View" and then "Source" or "Source Code" you will see the language used to create the page you are viewing.
**********
DOMAIN NAME
A unique name, formed with letters and numbers, that points to the actual numerical Internet address which locates a particular computer connected to the Internet. For instance, The Yahoo domain name points to Internet address 66.218.71.198.
So when you enter www.yahoo.com in your browser and click go, a special server called a domain name server intercepts and directs your request to the server located at address 66.218.71.198. USSVI's Domain Name is ussvi.org for example.
**********
BROWSER
Software or the program on a computer used to request and display web pages (a page is the site you are viewing. Example of a page is ussvi.org) from a Server. Examples of Browsers are: Internet Explorer (IE), Firefox, Opera, Safari, and others. When you use your browser to call up (USSVI.org) for example you are not reading the National Office's computer or Pat Householders machine. You are reading a server that the author of page created or modified and sent to that server. Also; when you call up a page, that page is placed in your computers memory. That is why you must refresh or reload the page if you add to it. A BBS is a good example. If you make a post, you won't see it until you reload the page. Where you have been and the pages you have brought into your computer are retained in memory unless you clear your history periodically. This is done in both IE and Firefox under options/Internet options.
**********
A driver is a special type of software. Whenever your PC needs to connect to and control a peripheral device like a printer or scanner the driver written to work with it is required.

So what do you do if you need a driver? Try going to the hardware manufactures website and looking for a link to drivers.
**********
A DLL (dynamic link library) is a small program that is used for a specific purpose by the main program that calls it. Windows programs like Word and Excel call and use many DLL files.

Unlike most programs, that link and compile all the program elements they need before they begin executing, DLLs are only loaded and used as they are needed. This feature saves RAM space, which is a valuable resource. A DLL file usually has a filetype of '.dll'.

DO NOT FORWARD THESE BROADCASTS! CUT AND PASTE IT INTO A NEW EMAIL FROM YOU TO THOSE IN YOUR BASE WHO ARE ON YOUR LIST TO RECEIVE THEM!
WHY? A FEW ARE REPORTING THE BROADCASTS AS SPAM AND WE ARE BEING WARNED THAT WE MIGHT GET BLACKLISTED WHICH WOULD PREVENT ANYONE WITH THAT SERVICE PROVIDER FROM EVER RECEIVING A MESSAGE FROM USSVI AGAIN.
******************
ALSO: Some are concerned about the large number of "notifications" they receive via the BaseOfficers BBS system when posts are made there. Please notify all your officers that they can turn these automatically generated notifications off by:
Logging in then go to "Settings"
Scroll down on left to the box reading, "Receive e-mail notifications by default" and click the yes box to no AND THEN CLICK SUBMIT AT THE BOTTOM!

NEWS-08: A Boat Association Bonus!
Submitted by: Pat Householder on
6/14/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
A really big advantage USSVI offers is the opportunity for our members to reconnect with their shipmates. Any member can do this through using the BOATS and CREWS feature to find their buddies from the good ole Ustafish!

Now, this advantage is being extended to the shipmates who maintain the records for their individual boat association.

Thanks to Tim VeArd, boat associations now can have the FREE use of our online database system AND a FREE website through which the crew can visit their records.

Why is this a big deal? Because it consolidates all the boat sailors in one data 'pot' where each submariner is connected through the boats they served in. Many of us served on more than one boat and by consolidating this information in one location rather than scattered both on and offline, it helps us ALL reconnect with more of our shipmates.

The subvets enrolled in the database do not have to belong to USSVI (even though they are missing out on a good deal if they don't). The boat's webmaster does have to be a member of USSVI, however, for technical access reasons.

Any boat who wants to take advantage of this great deal can contact me for details or to get it set up. householderp@comcast.net or 425 392-0440.

They are like our USSVI base websites, but with more features because of the need to set up, track and manage reunions.

Any boat association who has their own website, if they prefer they can also use the free membership "link" tools on their existing sites. All of the items above also work the same for this links.

NEWS-12: One Sub, Coming right up...
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 6/19/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Now, Juliett 484, a Soviet-era ballistic-missile submarine, is still stuck in the mud on the bottom of Providence harbor, flooded and rusting inside, and home to plants, crabs, and the few fish hardy enough to live in Providence’s murky waters.

The sub sank in April 2007 in a severe storm, and now rests on its side in 35 feet of water just off
Collier Point Park.

As strange as it may sound at first mention, a Russian sub sunk in shallow water in the port of an American city is an ideal training opportunity for salvage teams.

NEWS-13: A call for help from the Trumpetfish Veterans Association
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 6/19/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
"One of our shipmates, Ed Sanders and his wife Marlene, were forced to evacuate their home in Palo, Iowa last week due to the extreme flooding in that area.

Based upon a suggestion from Merrill Molaison (USSVI Tullibee Base), I (Terry Trump) am setting-up a Relief Fund to show our support for their misfortune.

I think it is a very good idea, and if any of you
would like to contribute to this Relief Fund, I'll be glad to coordinate this. Just mail it to me at:

Terry Trump
404
Pinehurst Ave.
Summerville, SC 29843

Make your check out to: Trumpetfish Veterans Assoc., and on the 'note' line at the bottom write in; 'Sander's Relief Fund'.

Since we (Trumpetfish Assn) are a Non-Profit Organization the donation will be tax deductible, and I will send you a receipt for your donation.

They will have some rough days ahead to overcome the ravages of this record flooding in their area. This is one of our shipmates, and they will need our help. I hope that we can show them we are there for them spiritually, fraternally, and financially.

As it happens, Ed Sanders is not a USSVI member, but he is a fellow subvet and if you feel he should receive your help, please send your contribution as directed above.

Terry Trump was COB on Trumpetfish and a USSVI member of Charleston Base.

Thank you to Mike Jenkins of USSVI Columbus Base for bringing this to our attention.

NEWS-14: Holland Club Incoming!
Submitted by: Ronald L Martini on 6/19/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Fifty-five veterans received Holland Club induction as United States Submarine Veterans Inc. Groton Base held its annual ceremony for members across seven SUBVET bases: Chesapeake Base, Groton Base, Long Island Base, NJS Base, Philadelphia Base, Rhode Island Base, and USS Scranton Base. Saturday June 7th.

Three stories stand out from the Induction;
....Master Chief Torpedoman's Mate (SS) David "Red" Padgett. Red said that within his 30 years, he was most proud that he and his son, David Padgett Jr., had both made deployments to the North Pole.

What made it unique was that both of their ICEX trips were on the same boat, USS Archerfish (SSN 678). Red made his deployment in 1979, and Dave Jr. made his in 1986. John Carcioppolo who was the presenter was also aboard both of these runs.

....Chief Commissaryman (SS) Robert W. Burr who qualified in submarines on the S-24 (SS 129) in 1938. He later made four war patrols during World War II, and recently turned 94.

....Another was Chief Fire Controlman (SS) Wilbert "Tex" Dettman. Tex is a Pearl Harbor Survivor. He had recently transferred from USS Swordfish (SS 193) and was awaiting orders to another submarine when the Japanese attacked.
