1)Need a FAX setup? Don't even need a phone!
www.trustfax.com has a $30/year plan with 50 outbound and 150 inbound pages via email. All you need is a scanner. They have more options upwards also. They give you a FAX number

2)Read the fine print! If you buy a subscription for a year for some programs, be aware they may automatically charge you the following year without asking! Spyware Doctor is one of many.

3)Usually the larger the programs share of market the more it will draw attention from hackers bent on destruction. Keep your browser up to date! Firefox 2.0.0.13 is the latest for that browser and fixes 5 "holes" that hackers attacked. Safari for Apple also has new versions. Keep your IE up to date either automatically or check weekly via Start-Programs or just Start of some systems and let Microsoft do the search, download, and install with hardly any input from you.

4)Want an icon on your desktop for a program you use a lot. Start-Programs-(find the program you want)-right click on it and click "Send To" and then desktop.

5)Search your system frequently? Windows index system is near worthless in XP and
Vista and it slows both systems down. To disable it in XP do a "Google" search for "disable Windows indexing service" and follow the steps. In Vista, in Add/Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components in the left panel and deselect Indexing Services. NOW--if you need indexing a great program (free) is Copernic at www.tucows.com and enter Copernic in the search box and download and install it. It uses a minimum of system resources and file space, and indexes most files, including Outlook e-mail messages, as soon as they're received.

6)Screen Savers! Pretty but not needed and take some memory from your system. Best to use your Power settings to put the monitor to sleep and save a little money. It can also make defragmenting very time consuming because it interrupts the process. So to disable it for good or just for defragmenting:
Use your right mouse button and single-click in an open area on your desktop. You’ll get a pop-up menu. At the bottom of this menu is an option called . Single-click it.

The window opens. At the top of the screen is a row of tabs. Single-click on the one marked . Single-click it and you’ll access your screensaver settings.

Halfway down this screen you’ll see a box with the name of your screensaver in it. Single-click the arrow next to the right of this box and you’ll open a pull-down window that lists all your possible screensavers. Scroll up to the very top of this menu and you’ll find an option called . Single-click this option.

Now that you’ve selected , you’ll have to save your changes. Single-click the button at the bottom of the screen, and then single-click on . You’ve now disabled your screensaver.

Lockheed Martin-Built Trident II D5 Missile Achieves Record 122 Successful Test Launches in a Row.

Two D5 Fleet Ballistic Missiles Launched in Navy Test in the Pacific SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 21

SUNNYVALE, CA. :
The U.S. Navy conducted a successful test launch this month of two Trident II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missiles (FBMs) built by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT). The Navy launched the unarmed missiles from the submerged submarine USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) in the
Pacific Ocean. First deployed in 1990, the D5 missile is currently aboard Trident II Ohio-class submarines and British Trident II Vanguard-class submarines. The three-stage, solid-propellant, inertial-guided ballistic missile can travel a nominal range of 4,000-6,000 nautical miles and carries multiple independently targeted reentry vehicles (that means 7-14 bombs in the 150-300megaton range each and each targetable.) And for comparison sakes, the Hiroshima bomb (FAT-Boy) was just a 13 Kilotons blast and weighed 9000 lbs.

NEWS-04: A USSVI member's Honor Air Flight to WWII Memorial in
Washington DC.
Submitted by: George Bass on
5/23/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Wow - what a day May 17th turned out to be for me and 99 other WWII Veteran's.

We had to clear Security at
5:00 AM - then a light breakfast and our flight departed Daytona International at 6:38AM. We walked through two lines of applauding people, mostly dressed in red, white and blue. Holding signs and also shouting "thank you for all you did" as we walked to the boarding area.

As the airplane was moving out to the runway the fire department shot arches of water over the plane with their water cannons. All airport personnel working the runway areas were waving American flags.

The flight to
Washington, DC took one hour and forty five minutes. As we entered the Reagan airport a band was playing and hundreds of people were lined up waving flags and again saying, "thank you." We boarded three custom buses - Red, White and Blue. I was on the White bus. We had eight motorcycle police and three police cruisers escorting the three buses. We did not stop at any intersection on our journey to the WWII Memorial. Can you imagine driving through Washington, DC without having to stop! Not only that but along the way friendly people were waving and again holding signs saying "thanks."

When I exited the bus at the WWII Memorial I saw a young man shaking the hands of those who had exited before me - it was Sam Bass - my cousin, But Sam has always called me "Uncle Alfred" so now he is my nephew! Then came his wife Julie and behind her Lois's niece Laurie. We were all delighted to see and be with each other.

I must explain - the Veteran's making the trip were assigned to a Guardian. Each Guardian was responsible at all times for three of the WWII Veterans. My Guardian was Kevin Thomas, who owns a plumbing company near Deland. Kevin took excellent care of his three Veterans - he made sure we wanted for nothing.

The Veteran's were also met by Congressman John Mica, who represents the Central Florida District. The Congressman had been involved in helping plan the entire venture and he remained with the group for the entire day.

Laurie, Julie, Sam and I were able to spend about an hour and a half together. Oh - Ex-Senator Bob Dole made an appearance and spoke to the group. It was a great photo opportunity and Sam got an excellent photo of the Ex-Senator and Speaker of the House.

Reluctantly we had to take leave of Laurie, Julie and Sam as we boarded the buses for a trip to the Capital where we had photos taken on the steps of the Capital. Then off to lunch at the Capital Hill Restaurant, where we ate in the Eisenhower Room. As we entered the Restaurant we were greeted by Gordon
England, Deputy Secretary of Defense. he shook everyone's hand and gave us "thanks."

The lunch was excellent and we then boarded the bus for
Arlington Cemetery. We placed a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, after watching the impressive "Changing of the Guard." We departed Arlington and drove past the Women in Service Memorial. Next stopping at the Korean War and Viet-nam Wall Memorials. Departing here we next went to the Iwo Jima Memorial.

By now our day was winding down - we had been on the go for about 13 hours. We headed back to
Reagan Airport with the police escort arriving about 6:00 PM. Then we learned that our flight back was being delayed as they were trying to assemble a flight crew. We flew up and back on the same airplane, but the crews and pilots were changed. The delay was about an hour and a half which put us back in Daytona close to 11:00 PM - this made our day about 19 hours long, but everyone held up great.

Its difficult to visualize all the people cheering, applauding, holding "thank you" signs, but there were there from beginning to end. The people of
Volusia County, the three Rotary Clubs who did all the work, the Guardians and especially Sheriff Ben Johnson and his staff, who also accompanied the Veteran's on the trip - all I can say is "thanks." It was one of the most memorable days of my life and I shall always be indebted to those who made this trip a reality.

There were only two WWII submarine Veterans on the trip - myself and Frank Boarman. Frank was a crew member of the USS Spot, which had a good WWII record. Frank, John (Army Veteran) and myself were assigned to Kevin Thomas, our Guardian. I might also add that I was the only Veteran making the trip who fought in a combat zone during WWII, Korean War and Viet-nam War. I was also the youngest WWII Veteran in the group making the trip to
Washington, DC.

The WWII Memorial is beautiful and most impressive. It is a great tribute to the 13 million Veterans of WWII. If you have never visited it or attending the "Changing of the Guard" ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier you should make this a thing to do.

Many of the men attending Saturday's 40th anniversary memorial service at Norfolk Naval Station were retired submariners.

A few dozen visitors were related to the 99 men aboard the Scorpion, including children born after the submarine disappeared at the height of the Cold War.

Four were widowed too young - wives who had no graves to visit, mothers with no good answers for anxious children.

NEWS-12: US Navy News

WASHINGTON - This past week the U.S. Navy's next generation submarine rescue system, the Submarine Rescue Diving and Recompression System (SRDRS), impressed the international community during a NATO submarine rescue exercise - Bold Monarch 08 (May 26 - June 6, 2008) - in the Baltic Sea off Norway's southern coast.
Over the first five days of the 12-day exercise that was designed to train and demonstrate international submarine escape and rescue coordination, the SRDRS mated to and transferred personnel from three participating submarines, one each from Norway, the Netherlands, and Poland. Additionally, personnel from the
United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Russia, Pakistan, India, Norway, Italy, Israel, Sweden, Spain, Singapore, the Netherlands, France, and China spent time aboard the SRDRS.

ABOARD THE USS
LAKE ERIE » Chief Petty Officer Steven Couey has been in the Navy for 14 years and been sent out on sea deployments four times.
Beginning in September, Couey, 33, will again be deployed, but far away from any ocean or sea.
He will become a "sand sailor" and join the growing number of "individual augmentees" -- sailors whom the other services have begun to rely on to fill critical shortages in
Iraq, Afghanistan and other places as the war continues to drag on.
Through last month the Navy said 4,975 sailors have gone to
Iraq and another 1,497 served in Afghanistan since the war started. Adm. Robert Willard, Pacific Fleet commander, noted that the program was "initiated in order to provide a degree of relief to our Army and to our Marine Corps so heavily engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world."

NORFOLK - Sailors are getting a realistic sense of what it's like to go under in the newest submarines without ever leaving land.
The trainer moves around, giving those inside a feel for what it's like to dive and surface in state-of-the-art
Virginia class submarines. It's not for the weak of stomach
The simulator, called Virginia Ship Control Operator Trainer, is in the submarine learning facility at Naval Station Norfolk.
The simulator's hydraulics jostle the imaginary sub's control room around, recreating the kind on "angles and dangles" that submariners know well, but landlubbers might find a little discomforting.
The crew of the under-construction USS New Mexico say the experience is superb.
"The trainer is the best that could be offered. I'm really excited about the training, our guys are excited about it and we're just looking forward to getting this thing started," said Chief Roger Meffley.
Friday was the ribbon cutting for the the simulator, called Virginia Ship Control Operator Trainer, at the submarine learning facility at Naval Station Norfolk.
