NEWS-02: Bad weld problem will not go away
Submitted by: Base on 5/8/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
The Navy has begun reviewing a Northrop Grumman long-term plan to deal with welding problems on Newport News-built nuclear submarines, the service said Wednesday.
The several-hundred-page report, submitted April 21 by Northrop's
Newport News shipyard, contains detailed findings from an intensive investigation on improper welding procedures on all subs built or serviced in Newport News since 2000. It also includes recommendations on how the Navy should proceed with future inspections and testing on the boats to ensure safety.

In a months-long investigation, Navy and shipyard inspectors looked at about 200 welds on critical systems in each of the four completed Virginia-class subs and found only one error – a faulty weld on a 2-inch joint on the USS Virginia's emergency main ballast tank blowout system, a Navy official told the Daily Press in March. Two other critical errors were found on the
New Hampshire, a boat that's set to be delivered this year.

NEWS-03: Royal Navy Submariners donate Submarine Memorial

Royal Navy Submariners donate Submarine Memorial to the Cold War Submarine Memorial at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

(Mt. Pleasant, SC, May 7, 2008) VADM Albert J. Baciocco, Jr., USN (Retired), career submariner, resident of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Chairman of the former Cold War Submarine Memorial Foundation, announced today that former and current Submariners of the British Royal Navy have donated a unique, hand-crafted sculpture commemorating the Royal Navy Submarine Force contributions during the Cold War, to the Cold War Submarine Memorial located at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum.

The sculpture was created by retired Rear Admiral Frank Grenier, RN, a former Flag Officer Submarines. He is an Associate Fellow of the Guild of Glass Engravers whose work has been shown in
London, Hong Kong and The Netherlands, and whose sculptures include a large memorial which commemorates the Royal Navy involvement in the Allied D-Day landings in Normandy, placed in the British Garden of Remembrance in Caen, France.

The submarine memorial sculpture depicts a flow of dolphins which link up the different sizes of blue glass panels. The older classes of diesel powered British Royal Navy submarines which took part in the Cold War are recorded at the top. The later classes of nuclear powered submarines are depicted at the bottom, acknowledging their deeper diving depths. The engraving was done with a hand held electric drill and diamond burs and took over six months to complete.

The sculpture, which will become a permanent part of the existing Royal Navy station of the Cold War Submarine Memorial, will be unveiled at a ceremony at
2:00pm, Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Memorial.

Retired Royal Navy Admiral Sir James Perowne KBE, also a former Flag Officer Submarines, currently President of the Royal Navy Submariner’s Association, will represent the
United Kingdom at the ceremony.

The ceremony will be open to the public.

The Cold War Submarine Memorial, designed and constructed by the Cold War Submarine Memorial Foundation and gifted to the State of
South Carolina, accurately replicates the full-sized strategic submarine of that era and incorporates the sail and rudder of the former USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN 644), a Charleston-based Poseidon missile submarine. The Memorial was dedicated in December 2002, and serves to honor the contributions and sacrifice of members of our community, both civilian and military, who protected the United States and its allies during the Cold War (1947 – 1989) through their service to the Navy’s Submarine Force. The Memorial pays special tribute to the citizens of the Charleston area and South Carolina whose strong commitment to freedom and democracy provided strong and unflagging moral support to these Navy men and to their families throughout the challenging years of that war.

Support for the installation of the new sculpture was provided in part by members of the former Cold War Submarine Memorial Foundation, the Patriots Point Foundation, the Naval Submarine League, the Charleston Council of the Navy League, and the Charleston Base of US Submarine Veterans Inc.

SubVet Computer School: Printer costs-Saving money

Too often an inexpensive inkjet printer ends up costing you a fortune. Here's how to control your inkjet costs.
Practice good housekeeping: Keeping your printer's mechanisms clean will ensure that the device runs at its best. An occasional blast from a $7 can of compressed air (available at electronics stores) will keep dust and bits of paper from clogging the paper path and other moving parts.
Ensure that the small ink nozzles on your print heads are clear of dried ink. The most common cause of clogs is underuse, so print a page once a week to keep the nozzles clean. Many inkjet printers have a cleaning program in their settings that can handle partially clogged nozzles. However, these programs are ink profligates, so use them judiciously. If running the program once doesn't help, print another page to eliminate excess ink before you run the program again. (Note that many inkjets automatically clear the nozzles when you turn the machines on.)
Use less ink: Cut down on the ink your printer deposits on the page by lowering its quality setting. Right-click the printer's entry under 'Printers and Faxes' in Control Panel, and look for a 'Print Quality' setting. Change to Draft quality if just for your own use. You can easily change back to
Normal if the page is going to be mailed or seen by others. If you have a color inkjet but print mostly in black, disable the device's color-printing setting; on some models, this not only saves ink but also speeds up printing. To avoid having to change your print quality--or any other setting--each time you print, create an additional printer installation for each. For example, make one labeled "Draft" for low-resolution printing, and another named "Final" for printing at the highest quality.
Almost never pay retail: Third-party replacement ink cartridges from such online retailers as PrintPal and Carrot Ink can cost less than half the price of the manufacturer's ink cartridges. However, these savings aren't without risk. PC World tests of third-party inks revealed problems with quality--especially the ink's longevity--as well as with clogged print nozzles. The bottom line: If you require consistently high-quality, high resolution output for presentation graphics or photographs, stick with the manufacturer's cartridges; but if you print lots of draft documents and low-resolution images, third-party cartridges may be worth the potential hassles.
Consider a new printer: For the price of two cartridges for a Lexmark X3430 color/BW printer/scanner/copier, you could have purchased a new machine and saved $13.00! The new machine costs $27.88 at your local big national discounter. A new Canon MX300 copier/scanner/printer/fax costs
$59.99 and one cartridge for it runs $19.98. Another example is the Hewlett-Packard's Deskjet 3520. It is their first ink jet printer to be introduced at $40. Its overall print quality is fairly good--but you'll pay as much for one set of replacement black and tricolor cartridges as you did for the printer itself.

NEWS-07: Cavalla Historical Foundation seeks your help!

2007 was one of the most exciting years since it's formation for the Cavalla Historical Foundation. Attendance at
Seawolf Park is increasing as the public takes increasing notice of the progress in reconditioning the Cavalla and Stewart.

The torpedoes are loaded and corrosion on the bow is being addressed, and the USS Stewart (DE) is being refurbished inside to enhance the visitor's experience.

The CHF also acquired the conning tower (barrel) of the USS Carp for exhibit and will modify it for easy viewing of the interior.

The upkeep and maintenance of these ships are funded solely by a share of the gate receipts and by private donations.

The CHF needs our support to complete the restoration of the sub and DE and to build a visitors center, which will become the
Underseas Warfare Center, housing many of their artifacts and will serve to educate the public.

Please consider donating to the fully tax exempt Cavalla Historical Foundation to help us complete this work.

It's part of our heritage and if we don't help take care of it, who will?

AIP submarines could be a particularly formidable threat when operating in coastal waters, marginal ice zones, or maritime straits and other global "choke points." Add to that the virtual certainty that new underwater weapons will help equalize the performance disparity between AIP boats and nuclear-powered submarines and it may well happen that the U.S. Navy will want to reassess the desirability of developing an AIP submarine of its own, if only to learn how to counter this new and potentially revolutionary undersea challenge.
