2)DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY -- NAVAL HISTORICAL CENTER--805 KIDDER BREESE SE -- WASHINGTON NAVY YARD WASHINGTON DC 20374-5060
has a very nice submarine display in place:
Dive! Dive! U.S. Navy Submarines

Submarines have played an important role in
U.S. defense policy for more than 200 years. They attack, perform rescue and recovery missions, collect scientific data, and gather intelligence for strategic nuclear deterrence.

In our simulated submarine combat center, visitors learn about the fundamentals of submarine technology through interactive displays. The submarine room also traces the development and history of the American submarine from Turtle to the
Los Angeles class.

Interesting artifacts in the submarine exhibit include:

Model of David Bushnell's one-man Turtle submarine
Model of USS Patrick Henry
Interactive computer touch-screens and displays
Several distinctive and colorful submarine battle flags
Re-created interior of a submarine operations space, including two working periscopes
Bust of Admiral Hyman Rickover

NEWS-04:
SubVet Computer School: Proper Email Addressing
Submitted by: Ronald L Martini on

---------------------------------------------------------
If you’re creating or forwarding emails that show the email addresses to others your
sending/forwarding that email to, then this message is for you! Please don’t help the
spammers of the world by giving them everyone’s email address!
What’s the proper email etiquette?
If you’re going to forward an email you received that shows the email addresses of other
folks, please delete those email addresses before you forward that email. The easiest way
I know of to delete those addresses is to drag the cursor over the email addresses
highlighting them, release the cursor, and press the delete key. This by the way works on
any text you want to delete.
Use the Blind carbon copy (Bcc) feature every email program I know of has when
entering multiple email addresses. By default, Microsoft Outlook only shows To or Cc
for a new email. Thunderbird Email is the same while Eudora has it in the header by default. To display the Bcc entry field in Outlook and Thunderbird, click on To to display the default Contac List. At the bottom of the contact list is the Bcc entry field where you should enter the
contact names.
When you send an email to people using Bcc instead of To or Cc, the recipient's name is
not visible to other email recipients. By hiding the recipients' names using the Bcc entry
field, no one will be able to spam the recipients' e-mail addresses from your messages.

Bcc helps you to be respectful of others' privacy by keeping them in the loop without
disclosing their identities. People who send junk e-mail or spam would like for you to
use To or Cc, they don’t like it when you use Bcc.

One reason I know of for using Cc instead of Bcc is when you want people to know who
you're sending an email message to. So PLEASE use Bcc instead of Cc unless you have
a reason not to!

Some email programs require at least one recipients email address in the To entry field.
If this is the case with your email program, simply email yourself and Bcc “everyone
else.”

NEWS-11: The Cute Blond Soda Jerk
Submitted by: George Herold on 5/7/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
George Herold, WWII Subvet recalls…

“After my enlistment in May of 1941, I did boot camp at Newport RI and Sub School at New London CT. Was sent to San Diego (SUBDIV41) and shipped on the USS S27. After 1 or 2 liberties in
San Diego, I stumbled into this MAJESTC MALTE SHOPPE, just off of 5th Ave. and am served by this cute little blond soda-jerk. I love ice cream. We had seemed to have hit it off on each other right away.

It is now Oct 1941. Less than a week later, the Skipper, Lt. Frank Stovall, tells me that he's sending me to QM/SM school at the Sub Base in
Pearl Harbor. So, its good-bye to my gal in San Diego for a while. I'm still a "wise-ass" 17 yr old 2nd Class Seaman, from NYC, who thought I knew it all, but really didn't.

While I'm at
Pearl, the ‘bombing’ takes place. (That’s another story) With the school now over in Feb of '42, it’s back to San Diego, my S27, & my little blond soda jerk. However, our country is now at war and things are moving at a faster pace now. Its good-bye, again, to San Diego and my little gal.

We sail out of there in early May for the Aleutian area, with all of us thinking we'd be back in
San Diego by Christmas. But, that's not the way it went. Our S27 is lost, but all of us survived on deserted Amchitka Island and are rescued by Naval Air from under the noses of our enemy on Kiska Island, close by.

WW2 goes on for another three years, I do 10 more War Patrols on two different boats.

After WW2, a broken leg & hip while on AMBERJACK, forces me out of the Navy in 1949.

It is now 2008, and as yet I have not gotten back to
San Diego. The MAJESTIC MALTE SHOPPE no longer exists, as I have found out.

I"m now an 84 yr old grandfather and my little blond soda-jerk is, hopefully, an 83 yr old grand-mother. I remember her as "DOT".

I have often wondered if she remembers me (?) -------“

NEWS-13: Before you go... A Musical tribute
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 5/7/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
"Before You Go" is offered as an expression of heartfelt gratitude to our aging veterans - those who fought and won the Second World War, fought in Korea to preserve that victory, and later in an unpopular war to stop post WWII communist aggressions in Vietnam, yet all too frequently returning home to a cold reception from those whose freedoms they fought to protect.

"Before You Go" is a tribute and "thank you" for their bravery, gallantry and sacrifices that assure the continued enjoyment of freedoms unprecedented in the history of mankind.
