Many are now taking pictures and trying to share them with their friends and family online. Many times, this is met with frustration because the pictures have such a large file size that they overwhelm many e-mail servers and take dial-up users a long time to download. What you need to do, is create a smaller version of the picture to send via e-mail.

If you are using Windows XP, there is a fairly easy way to do this...
1. Open your "My Pictures" folder by clicking on "Start" and then "My Pictures".
2. In your picture folder, find the file you want to send by e- mail, and right click on it, point to "Send To" and then click on "Mail Recipient". If you want to send more than one picture, you can highlight a group of pictures by dragging with your mouse, or click on the first picture, hold down your shift key and then click on the last picture.
3. A small window will appear that gives you the option to make your picture smaller, or keep the original size. Just chose "Make all my pictures smaller" and then click "OK".
4. This will open up an e-mail message with your smaller picture already attached. All you will have to do, is fill out the rest of the e-mail and send it.
5. Another way to do the above and reduce the size of pictures being sent is to use a program that reduces the picture without losing it's quality. I use www.irfanview.com. Download that program, change the size, and then use your email programs "Attach" feature to send your picture with your email.

A Short story: I wanted Office 2007. Scouting around I found it for $79. I knew it was not an "authorized" version. The price is about $249+.
So I then found one for $159. Wow. I bought. It was a pirate copy from a company in
Los Angeles that looked perfect. If even worked until I tried to update it from Microsoft and found I had been duped. I managed to talk my credit card company into a refund as I wasn't the first. Talk with others before you buy off the Net.

The U.S.N.Submarine Base in
Groton, will pay a cash penalty and perform an additional environment project, in settlement of EPA allegations of improper storage and management of hazardous wastes.

An EPA inspection of the submarine base's hazardous waste storage facilities in August of 2006 identified significant violations of federal requirements, including the failure of the Base to maintain adequate building ventilation in the main building used for the storage and treatment of hazardous wastes.

NEWS-03: A WWII Story...

During the summer of 1941 I was finishing up Boot Camp at
NEWPORT RI.

From the parade grounds you could always see several ships at anchor out in the bay. Once in a while a submarine could be seen.

At first sight I was hooked. No sooner than I had written home of my intention, than the USS O-9 is lost with all hands just off
Portsmouth NH.

Naturally, the family is upset as the USS SQUALUS had gone down losing half her crew in 1939. But I was a headstrong, wise-ass 17 yr old, and that was that.

Twelve months later, during June of 1942, the USS S27, my ship, is lost due to a bad situation and not as a result of enemy action.

We survive on a deserted island, for six days, close to the big Japanese base at KISKA prior to being rescued by our own forces.

My family would learn nothing of this until my next leave in August of 1943.

This is one of my stories and I'm sticking to it. - George J.Herold, ex-SM1C(SS), U.S.NAVY, 1941/1949

FTSN Matthew Westover, of USS Ohio (SSGN 726), was awarded an Award of Merit, the highest award available through the Washington State Patrol.

On Aug. 17, a flatbed truck on WA Highway 8 struck a tree and burst into flames. The driver of the truck was killed in the crash; however, the passenger, 24-year-old Paul Orris, was alive and trapped inside the flaming truck.

Westover, without regard for his own life, was one of three people who stopped and freed the passenger from the inferno.

NEWS-05: Defense Department to Phase Out Full Social Security Numbers on IDs

As a means of combating identity theft, the Defense Department will issue identification cards without full Social Security numbers printed onto them, a senior official said here today.

Plans are to remove the Social Security numbers from identification cards issued to military family members by the end of this year,
Dixon said, noting that those cards still would display the sponsors’ SSN, for now. Between 2009 and 2010, all department-issued identification cards will feature only the last four digits of a holder’s Social Security number, she said.

How did you spend Submarine Forces Birthday on April 4th? Here's how 20 Submariners spent their day!
Camp Bucca,
Iraq - There were no dress blues, just desert beige. No wine or beer, just chai tea and water. And no deejay with music, just the popping of bugs as they flew to their deaths in the pest traps.
This is how the submariners at
Camp Bucca celebrated the Submarine Force's 108th birthday Friday.
These submariners are in the desert as "individual augmentees," aiding the Army by temporarily leaving their regular roles to serve on the ground.
"Happy Birthday, you guys," said Captain Derenski, who commanded the New Hampshire, a Virginia-class submarine now under construction at Electric Boat in Groton, before going to Camp Bucca to command the area of the detainee facility where the military service members live.

NEWS-07: Silversides needs some financial lovin...
Submitted by: Pat Householder on

The USS Silversides is in dire need of dry docking. Dry docking for maintenance and repairs is a regular and integral part of preserving any vessel’s life. It is critical in helping to maintain and preserve the submarine for future generations.

Typically, submarines are dry docked every five years while commissioned.

There is no specific requirement for drydocking from NAVSEA for museum submarines, but it is generally understood that if they are permanently moored in fresh water, it should be done every 25 years. (NAVSEA oversees the material conditions of the museum subs; Requin, Silversides, Cobia and Blueback are fresh water moored.)

To see some pix of USS Pampanito when drydocked in 2007, visit http://www.w5blt.com/Pampanito/Pampanito2007.htm

The Silversides has not been in dry dock for nearly 55 years. The museum believes she is well overdue and they are seeking assistance from Silversides’ Sub Vet friends and supporters.

The estimated cost for this undertaking is $500,000 and all donations are tax-deductible.

They will be deposited into an escrow account to aide in the dry-docking.

Boats like Silversides represent our heritage as submariners.

Please help the Silversides! Click on the link to find out how...

Congress recently amended the U.S. Flag Code to now give the Governor authority to lower flags when a person in the military is killed in the line of duty.

The U.S. Flag Code now reads:

In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, or the death of a member of the Armed Forces from any State, territory, or possession who dies while serving on active duty the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff

Forty-five years ago today, on April 10, 1963, while engaged in a deep test dive, USS THRESHER (SSN 593) was lost at sea with 129 Officers and men on board. Based on the findings of a Court of Inquiry and the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy hearings into the loss, it was concluded that a flooding casualty in the engine room, resulting from a piping failure in one of the seawater systems, was the most probable cause of the loss.

The Department of Veterans Affairs deployed mobile pharmacies that will provide vital medicine when patients are unable to fill their prescriptions. Each VA mobile pharmacy is housed in a 40-foot long steel trailer that includes a satellite connection with VA's Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy system, which can process more than 1,000 prescriptions hourly. Pharmacists can use the satellite system to obtain a veteran's prescription data to dispense the drugs on site. Plans now call for one of the three mobile pharmacies to be stationed at
Dallas; Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and Charleston, S.C. with a fourth unit that will be placed soon in the western part of the country.
