SubVet Computer School: 5 good tips
Submitted by: Ronald L Martini on

---------------------------------------------------------
1) VISION PROBLEMS?
How to enlarge the text being displayed on a web page: you can use the Ctrl and the + (plus) key to increase the size of the text on the page. Repeated Key presses increases the size and using the - (minus) key reduces the size. Graphics will not change. This tip has the same effect as using the menu item under the "VIEW" menu for text size. Thanks to John Theotonio/NJ South.

A huge resource for visual problems on your computer is:
http://www.glaucomafoundation.org/vision/tips/index.html

Also you can set your mouse wheel to "Magnify" by going to Control Panel and Mouse.

2)Need to view a .doc file but don't have Word?
www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/pc.mspx is a download for a Word viewer.

3)Would you like to write a .pdf file/document? There are work arounds available or you can buy the Adobe 2008 program for $249 OR YOU CAN buy the 2007 version for $80 from Amazon.com which is what I did.

4)Running out of room on your hard drive? You can buy a 250meg external (a component external to your computer) hard drive for $77 at W...... These are great from storing graphics, movies, other large files. You plug in power and one cable to your 'puter's USB port. The system will assign it the next drive letter in your system automatically.

5)Graphic/Photo tools
Want some very useful Photo manipulation tools for your PC? Four excellent programs, three are "freeware" and one is "shareware" (that means you can try it for 30 days before you buy it.) All programs work on Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP and
Vista.

http://www.faststone.org/ (Highly recommended)

Another excellent graphics program that lets you resize, sharpen, rotate, print in greyscale, reduce red eye, many filers for special effects, insert text into a graphic/photo and much more
Irfanview 4.1 is the latest. Go to
www.download.com and put Irfanview in the searchbox. Download and install.

1) Benjamin C. Jarvis was a legend in the submarine service in World War II, receiving the Navy Cross for "extraordinary heroism" for taking on Japanese gunboats and sinking an enemy convoy during surface attacks in 1945.
A tall, powerfully built man whose crew referred to him as "Big Ben," Capt. Jarvis died at his home in
Fairfield, CT. on Feb. 22 at age 91.
He made 14 wartime patrols - three as commanding officer of the submarine Baya. His full obit is posted at
www.ussvi.org, click the Eternal Patrol Button.

2)Did you know: The USS Georgia is to be forward-deployed at the tiny island of Diego Garcia, in the Indian Ocean, and during operational periods, blue and gold crews will fly on and off the island for their turns sailing it. Perfecting the hand-off when new sailors will make up as much as a third of each oncoming crew will be a challenge. So will keeping qualifications current for the ship's sailors and its affiliated special operators if the
Georgia is to spend 70 percent of its operational periods at sea, as commanders hope.

3)The planned merger of IT rating and ET has been cancelled.

4)Driver Brad Keselowski drove the No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS to a fourth-place finish March 22, for the second weekend in a row in NASCAR Nationwide Series Pepsi 300 at Nashville Superspeedway.

Located in Muskogee OK and parked in a field, a WWII Submarine is the last thing you'd expect to find here, but the famed USS Batfish, famous Japanese submarine killer, has her final home here as a submarine memorial at War Memorial Park, located about 35 miles south of Tulsa.

Since the Natl Storekeeper Information was broadcast to the base officers, several have asked to be referred to a website to view the available merchandise.

The NSK website is yet to be overhauled, but here is a 'flick' complete with tunes that reprises most of the items available through 'Sub Huey', our national storekeeper.

Click on the link to see the items in stock by the USSVI National Storekeeper for the members via the Base Storekeepers.

NEWS-08: A new service to the Boat Associations...
Submitted by: Pat Householder on
3/29/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to Tim VeArd, the new FREE boat association websites are now ready.

In addition to the free USSVI Base websites, Tim VeArd is now offering free BOAT ASSOCIATION websites to members of USSVI.

Any boat who wants one can now contact me. They are like the base websites, but with more features because of the need to set up, track and manage reunions. The one caveat is the boat association webmaster must also be a USSVI member.

Each member ... who is current (dues paid for this year) ..... can enter their own career info (not base or boat association data).

For those of you using one of Tim's boat or base websites, your "computer challenged" members can fill out a questionnaire of changes they want made to their profile. ... they can also indicate they earned a gold crow.

Any base or boat who has their own website, can also use the free membership "link" tools on their existing sites. All of the items above also work the same for this links.

NEWS-11: The Ice Diaries
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 3/31/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Written by Capt William R Anderson with Don Keith, the book was virtually done when Capt Anderson passed away in Feb 2007.

It is the untold stories of the first transpolar underseas voyage of Nautilus.

Some will recall Capt Anderson's earlier book, "Nautilus 90 North" on this same topic. That book of necessity had to leave out much which was classified at that time.

"The Ice Diaries" is the complete story of this epic journey with all the details, including fires, storms, collisions with ice, broken equipment, a race to the pole and the political considerations behind the voyage.

Watch for "The Ice Diaries" when it becomes available in early August, 2008. It is a cracking good read.
