NEWS-01: Looking for the 'Movers and Shakers' that could help USSVI in the Submarine Community

Shipmates,

I am looking for the names and addresses (if possible) of persons or offices within the Submarine Community or Navy Community or Political Community, where you think we should be sending the American Submariner.

I already have many names, but I do not want to miss any of the high rollers. I have CNO for instance but you know of people or offices that would aid and abet the cause of USSVI.

Please send me the info or ideas you may have to SubVetsEditor@yahoo.com and I will take action on it.

Thanks for all you do..

Best,

Cut & Paste (more correct to say Copy & Paste)
Do you ever wish you could just move a section of text you want to save to another application such as email or a word document? Here is the procedure:
Place cursor on the first character of the section/words you want to copy. Press and hold left mouse button and move the mouse to highlight the words to want to save. Gently let go of mouse.
Press and hold CTRL key and then press C. You have now copy what you highlighted to a special area of your computer called the “Clipboard.”
Go to your email or wherever you want to “paste” what you just copied. Put the cursor exactly where you want it to appear, press and hold CTRL and then press V. You are done. You can do the copy and paste with the right mouse button also CTRL C and CTRL V is easy to remember. Basically here is short version; HIGHLIGHT, CTRL C, POSITION, CTRL V.
There is one caveat. You can paste this selection as many times as you want but should you copy another selection, the first one goes away. There are several Clipboard enhancement programs that will save your copies forever and let you select them at some future point. In a future School topic, we’ll discuss how to get one of these programs and install it on your computer.
There is a Cut & Paste procedure that uses the CTRL-X key versus the CTRL-C. CTRL-X removes the original selection rather than just copying it.

NEWS-06: CNO Tours Subase Groton
Submitted by: Ronald L Martini on 2/29/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Adm. Gary Roughead, visited the nation's first submarine base, Thurs., Feb 21, holding an all hands call, and an officers' and chiefs' call, and media availability before briefly touring the Naval Submarine Base New London waterfront.

"Submarines and the men who serve in them are the epitome of stealth," said Roughead. "The submarines that you operate and support ... are among the most technologically advanced and most capable systems that we have, not just in the United States Navy ... but in any military in the world. There is no more valuable arrow in our quiver." Roughead said.

A Sailor, who was proud of his rating, asked about the future of all rating mergers.

"In the effort to become more efficient, we may not have completely factored in the pride Sailors take in their particular specialty," said the CNO. "While we cannot go back, we put the brakes on several mergers. We will be examining them more closely."

NEWS-07: Razorback calls in the Plumbers...
Submitted by: Pat Householder on

---------------------------------------------------------
The USS Razorback has started to get her plumbing.

This is part of preparing RAZORBACK for an overnight program. These kinds of programs are very popular on other museum vessels and contribute significantly to their financial health.

The forward toilet and the 2 sinks in crews berthing will work along with the sinks in the crews mess.

A new sanitary tank will be put in the after battery space and pumped to the service barge and from there to the city sewer system.

All should be completed in a few weeks. Nothing in the boat will be seen by the public and everything will look the same inside the boat..

The COMSUBPAC Sailor of the Year competition was held on the 25th of February at the 'Harbor View' on Point Loma Naval Base (Ballast Point) in
San Diego.

This year's event was by invitation only.

Nine members of US Sub Vets Inc were in attendance led by Western District Six Commander, T Michael Bircumshaw. The other USSVI members were, CO Naval Base - Capt Mark Patton, Capt Denver McCune, Col George Kinnison, Lcdr Roy Bannach, Lt. Max Schell, Lt Dale Barkley, Master Chief Charlie Marin (PNC - USSVI), and Senior Chief Bob Miller (Commander Scamp Base), all members of USSVI Scamp Base.

Each competitor (Eight -
Four Shore sailors, Four Sea sailors) was presented with a cash award of $50.00, a copy of the most recent American Submariner and the 2008 USSVI Calendar.

Runners up received engraved plaques and the two selected as Sailor of the Year receiving bronze "Lone Sailor" sculptures.

Five of our shipmates were wearing their vests and in total we represented between 400 and 450 years of shipmates qualified in submarines.

USSVI was presented with an engraved plaque by COMSUBPAC, RADM Joe Walsh.

Suffice it to say that USSVI was well represented and made an extremely favorable impression at the ceremonies.

Shipmate Bircumshaw has been asked to be on the selection board for the 2009 SOY awards.

NEWS-10: Remembering War Patrols...
Submitted by: Pat Householder on

---------------------------------------------------------
Of the approximately 16 million Americans who served in the armed forces during WWII, estimates are that fewer than 4 million are alive today.

In SVWWII, for example, there are fewer than 3,000 members remaining.

As these individuals slip away so does the opportunity to capture their unique stories.

In an effort to collect, preserve and honor these fading memories a partnership was formed between the National Parks Service, Maritime Academy Charter School, the Delaware Valley Chapter of the United States Submarine Veterans of World War II (USSVWWII), the Philadelphia Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI) and Independence Seaport Museum to create Students, Stories, and the 'Silent Service' – an oral history project focusing on the personal experiences of submariners.

These stories have been placed in the museum's Archives and Library and are being used to enhance the visitor experience on board the USS Becuna, the museum's WWII and Cold War BALAO-class submarine.

The Depths of Courage: American Submariners at War with Japan, 1941-1945

A new book cowritten by SVWWII and USSVI Holland Club member Ron "Warshot" Smith!

In World War II, a chosen few fought a silent war beneath the waves...These are their stories.

In the dark days after
Pearl Harbor, the small, ill-equipped arm of the Navy known as Submarine Force would stand between the shattered U.S. Pacific Fleet and the might of the Japanese Navy. Unfortunately, the spirit and courage of the Submarine Force is being forgotten as the veterans of that force pass into history.

CHARITABLE-02: You Asked for It! The "CF" now available with GoodSearch
Submitted by: Pat Householder on
2/29/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
After establishing USSVI as a beneficiary to your using GoodSearch, powered by Yahoo Search, a number of shipmates asked that our Charitable Foundation be registered as an alternative as well.

I did, and USSVCF is now also available as a charity to select with GoodSearch along with USSVI.

Use Goodsearch and (depending on your selection) USSVI or USSVCF earns a penny every time you searched the Internet and a percentage of every purchase you make online goes to support USSVI or USSVCF.

GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate.

What is the 'news' on this service? Go to
http://www.goodsearch.com/Press.aspx to check it out.

Starting NOW, use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up!

GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 37 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy's and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you’ll be supporting your favorite cause.

Wondering who you can shop online with to trigger a donation? Visit
http://www.goodsearch.com/goodshop.aspx

Just go to
www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter USSVI as the charity you want to support.

GoodSearch also has a toolbar you can download from the homepage so that you can search right from the top of your browser. Click the link at the bottom for the options.

You can keep track of USSVI's estimated earnings by clicking on “amount raised” once you designate USSVI as your organization of choice.

The more people who use the site, the more money we’ll earn so please help spread the word and forward this email to as many people as possible.

We hope you’ll forward this email to your family, friends and co-workers and ask them to change their search engine to
GoodSearch.com.

And, be sure to spread the word!

Thanks, Shipmates...
