The combined SVWWII & USSVI Western Region conference in
Albuquerque NM set for April has been cancelled due to a lack of registration for participation. They needed 250 registrations but had less than 30 to date.

A special thank you to Charlie Brown and Bobby Reed for working so hard to make it happen. The bar was apparently just too high, but all should know they worked their 'butts off' to make it happen.

Design Work On New SSBN To Begin Soon
Navy, DARPA Want $35 Million To Develop Tango Bravo, Next-Gen Sub
By Dan Taylor, Inside the Navy, February 18, 2008

The Navy and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency have asked for more than $35 million in the proposed fiscal year 2009 budget to begin concept work on the next-generation submarine to replace the service's aging Ohio-class ballistic missile subs, according to budget documents.

Central to that effort is Tango Bravo, a DARPA project to introduce quieter shaftless propulsion, external stowing and launching of torpedoes to save space and the use of electric actuators to replace the sub's hydraulics and pneumatics.

The Navy must complete concept work soon in order for design to commence in the decade. Ohio-class submarines begin retiring in FY-27, “requiring construction of a replacement SSBN beginning in [FY-19],” according to the recently released 30-year shipbuilding plan.

NEWS-10: 105 yr old Floyd 'Skipper' Matthews, Departing!
Submitted by: Ken Henry on

---------------------------------------------------------
Drum Base & SVWWII member Floyd Matthews of
Florence AL departed on Eternal Patrol Sunday, February 24th 2008.

Floyd qualified on the USS S-44 (SS-155) in 1925. He was the oldest member of USSVI and celebrated his 105th birthday on February 3rd.

Arrangements are being made for Floyd to be buried at
Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, in the coming week.

Although Floyd joined the Navy in WWI to fight the Hun, he was too late to get to
Germany before Armistice Day. Floyd later volunteered for the Submarine Service, serving in boats without names, identified by Letter & Number only; i.e. O-6, S-12, S-4, R-13, O-4, R-14, S-43, & S-46.

Although eligible for retirement prior to the out break of hostilities in
Europe in WWII, Floyd remained in the Navy and subsequently accepted a commission.

During WWII, among other assignments, he served as Commanding Officer of USS Chickasaw ATF-83 and USS Diver ARS-5. Floyd attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander prior to his retirement in 1949.

Floyd is preceded in death by two wives and is survived, among others, by his son John and Daughter Priscilla.

Bill Matthews asked me to "thank all your fellow submariners for all they've done for "Skipper" over the past many years. The family will never forget their kindness."

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in rememberance of 'Skipper' to the US Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation,
PO Box 3870, Silverdale WA 98383 or via the internet at the "Just Give" link below.

VET-01: PTSD victims no longer need to prove trauma
Submitted by: Pat Householder on 2/19/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
The Veterans Affairs Department has dumped a policy requiring combat vets to verify in writing that they have witnessed or experienced a traumatic event before filing a claim for post-traumatic stress disorder, said the chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

“This change provides a fairer process for veterans with service-connected PTSD,” Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, said in a written statement. It “leaves claim adjudicators more time to devote to reducing the staggering backlog of veterans’ claims.”

Looking for federal employment can be confusing, but given that the US government typically advertises between 15,000 and 20,000 jobs a day, it's worth taking the time to learn the difference between a GS-0493 and a
WG-2810.

There are 442 white-collar and 410 blue-collar occupations listed in the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM's) Occupations of Federal White-Collar and Blue-Collar Workers report.

Each job title is identified by a unique job series number, and each job series is listed in a specific occupational group.
